Faith Alone Debate with Neil Dembeck
OPENING STATEMENT The Equivocation fallacy exists when a term with different meanings in different contexts is treated as if it has the same meaning in all contexts. For example, the word ARM can be used to describe the action of giving someone a weapon. We armed the troops for battle. It can be used to describe the weapon itself such as '' side arm'' or firearm . Finally, it can be used as the body part that actually carries the weapon. He held the rifle in his arms . Wor

Indiana's national championship a story book achievement for Catholics.
Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza from northdallasgazette.com Notre Dame being left out of the CFB playoff was an obvious injustice, but Catholics can take a lot of solace and inspiration from the story of the 2025-26 champions from the same state. Entering the 2024 season, Indiana was the losingest program in college football history, defeated in more than 700 games. Since then, they have gone 27-2 with the only losses coming to the combatants in last year's title game-

Another rendezvous with Therese of Lisieux
When I planned this little 4-day excursion, I knew it was going to be cold. I thought Champion/Green Bay, Wisconsin was going to be the worst. It wasn't. As I left Green Bay, the temperature was 8 degrees, but it continued to drop. I dealt with blustery winds and swirling snow for the entire 4 1/2 hour drive. The Shrine of Saint Therese of Lisieux opened at 10 AM in Darien, Illinois and by that time the temperature had dropped to 0 with wind chill factors more than 20 degrees

The experience of Champion was beyond my expectations
The more I strive to solve the mysteries of faith, the more mysterious God becomes and the more intoxicated I become on His wonderful, bewildering insanity. I had to go to Champion. I just had to. Most people thought I was mad to travel to Wisconsin in January and there was logic to their protests. If someone had told me- even a year ago- that I'd be sitting in a hotel room in Green Bay in mid-winter, I would have said they had taken leave of their senses. Maybe I have taken

A bitter cold walk with Jesus
I would be lying if I said that everything in the lead up and execution of this mini pilgrimage has gone right. In fact, without going into details, I'd say far more has gone wrong than I was prepared for or really fully know how to detail with. However, this trip to the Shire of Christ's passion in Saint John, Indiana is a memory that will linger. Walking a life size way of sorrows with Jesus, solemn music creating a backdrop, recorded narration at every station, was an awe

Next books on deck
Having read 3 books on the life and death of Saint Therese of Lisieux , my admiration for her is off the chart. I now will read these 2 books that detail some of the miracles that led to her canonization and her emergence as a catholic legend. A Shower of Roses first.

Book Review: Saint Therese of Lisieux- Her last conversations
Looking at the front cover of this book tells you all you need to know about the majesty of this great saint. That picture was taken on August 30th, 1897, a month to the day, before her death. The peacefulness and docility of her expression in that photo is hard to imagine in consideration of the agony she was experiencing at that time. ''Her last conversations'' give us a startlingly close and intimate look at her last days and her incredible strength in the face of unspeaka

How I have come full circle on the gun control debate
When a reasonable person makes a reasonable sounding argument, it is called persuasion. When an unreasonable person makes a reasonable sounding argument, it is called manipulation. I am here today admitting and confessing that I was on the wrong side of this issue based on reasonable sounding arguments by unreasonable people. This journey has been a deeply painful one for me that had me standing at the site of one of the most horrific school shootings in American history and

The stunning account of the death of Saint Therese of Lisieux
I have probably excerpted this book as much as any I have ever read. This is powerful stuff. She looks so radiant and at peace in this photo. Who can know the agony that led to this moment. On September 30, 1897, at the age of 24, Therese left this valley of tears to be with her God.

The Glory Be Novena to Saint Therese of Lisieux. Day 9.
“Holy Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, I thank Thee for all the blessings and favors Thou hast showered upon the soul of Thy servant Thérèse of the Child Jesus, during the twenty-four years she spent here on earth, and in consideration of the merits of this Thy most beloved Saint, I beseech Thee to grant me this favor, if it is in accordance with Thy most Holy Will and is not an obstacle to my salvation.” (For souls in purgatory) Glory be to the

Updated weather forecast for the upcoming trip
Taking this trip is very important to me and I'm really looking forward to it. I fully realize that the timing of a trip to Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin is not at all suited for January , but I have to work around the opportunities my job allows. I knew my chances of an unexpected warm spell in this area were not good and the long-term forecast is certainly confirming that. It will be seriously cold. Single digits at times. However, it looks like I will be avoiding a st

Saint Theophane Vernard, pray for us
In reading this excruciatingly painful book about the last days of Saint Therese, I look for consolation wherever she did. One of the saints that she clung to so tenderly was Saint Jean- Theophane Vernard who was martyred by beheading in 1861. It was Saint Venard who said; “We are all flowers planted on this earth, which God plucks in His own good time: some a little sooner, some a little later . . . Father and son may we meet in Paradise. I, poor little moth, go first. Adieu

The great Peshtigo fire of 1871 and the connection to Our Lady of Champion
The following excerpt is from Wikipedia , certainly not a Catholic source. Secular media testifying to a Catholic miracle. The Peshtigo fire was a large forest fire on October 8, 1871, in northeastern Wisconsin, United States, including much of the southern half of the Door Peninsula and adjacent parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The largest community in the affected area was Peshtigo, Wisconsin, which had a population of approximately 1,700 residents. The fire burned
