My thoughts on the President's inaugural address

Just 6 hours ago, I was in this esteemed city. In 26 hours, I will be there again. I want to feel a radically changed city. Will I? I hope so. I pray so. I'm not yet convinced.

A different kind of address

You are always going to get the truth from me and a straight answer and there was a lot to dislike in this speech. Everybody knows how repulsed I am by Trump's narcissism and larger-than-life estimation of himself.

"I was saved by God to make America great again"

"The golden age of America starts now"

Such a vainglorious proclamation is breathtaking in it's arrogance. Nothing like anointing yourself as God's chosen one. The unmitigated gall is stupefying.

This was a different kind of address in the first respect because it flipped the script. It went from "I am so blessed to live in America" to "America is so blessed to have me"

The speech was also very different in a second respect. Completely absent was the flowery rhetoric and the lines that stand the test of time-

"Ask not what your country can do for you"

"We have nothing to fear but fear itself"

"A shining city on the hill"

"A thousand points of light"

This speech was not designed to inspire hopes, dreams and imaginations. It was more a warning that a new regime was in town, tired of the crap and ready to clean house, top to bottom.

The positives of the speech
  • A rededication to energy independence

  • Tariffs and trade deals that work for America's interest over our enemies.

  • A rededication to the rule of law to our government institutions

  • A rededication to safe borders and a crackdown on illegal immigration

  • A crack down on gangs and cartels

  • A return to a sane economic policy.

The negative

This President, whose life was spared by God, gave not one word of commitment to the protection of our most vulnerable- the unborn.

Overall, it was not a great speech in itself. This was not a speech that can stand up to Roosevelt's or Kennedy's or Reagan's. This speech cannot stand on it's own because it wasn't that kind of a speech. This speech was an agenda. It was a business plane, a statement of policy, a list of goals.

This speech stands or falls by the results and that will be measured by who is making this same speech 4 years forward, on this day.

Our prayers are with the new President that he has the knowledge to know the right, the will to choose it and the strength to make it endure. (From the movie "First Knight")
