There will undoubtedly be some nuance and finesse in this morning's Vatican condemnation of the false events in Medjugorje and how could it be otherwise?
Millions of people's lives are going to be affected and that's why it is being handled delicately, in a press conference.
The Vatican will do everything they can to soften the blow. They will laud the great numbers of conversions, the changed hearts and those truly seeking to make a connection with their faith. They will continue to allow pilgrimages to Medjugorje as a ''religious center'' at least for a time.
In short, the Vatican is going to do everything they can to promote a soft landing which gives the myriads of people profiting from this situation the space and time to transition to other means of income while this one dies on the vine.
Make no mistake, however. As of today, the beginning of the end of Medjugorje will be in place.
Adherents of this event have milked- for decades- the lie that the Vatican took the investigation from the Bishops and the false hope that one day, the Papal See would overturn those Bishops who have unanimously held that Mother Mary has never appeared there once.
It will be done softly and with compassion, but it is an absolute certainty that the Vatican will close the books on Medjugorje today, without the approval supporters sought.
After today, there is no more Medjugorje.
We are only a few hours away.
