Narcissus was a beautiful young man, the son of the river god Cephissus and the nymph Liriope. His story, most famously told in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, centers on his extraordinary beauty and tragic fate. According to the myth, Narcissus was so stunning that many fell in love with him, but he rejected all suitors with cold indifference.
One of those he spurned was the nymph Echo, who had been cursed by Hera to only repeat what others say. Echo fell deeply in love with Narcissus, but when she approached him, he rebuffed her. Heartbroken, she faded away until only her voice remained. Another version involves a young man named Ameinias, who, after being rejected, killed himself with a sword Narcissus had given him, praying for the gods to curse Narcissus for his cruelty.
The goddess Nemesis, hearing these pleas for vengeance, led Narcissus to a clear pool of water. There, he saw his own reflection and fell in love with it, not realizing it was just an image. Captivated, he couldn’t tear himself away, refusing to eat or drink as he pined for the unreachable figure. Eventually, he either wasted away from longing or, in some tellings, took his own life in despair. Where he died, a flower—the narcissus, often associated with the daffodil—sprang up, forever tied to his name.
The myth carries layers of meaning: a warning against vanity and self-obsession, a tale of unrequited love, and even a reflection on identity. The prophecy from the seer Tiresias, who told Liriope that Narcissus would live a long life “if he never knows himself,” adds an ironic twist—his self-discovery led to his doom.
Today, his name lives on in “narcissism,” a term for excessive self-love, coined from this very story.
If there is a human personification of Narcissus today, it would be none other than Don Hartley whose toxic narcissism has made him absolutely radioactive to everyone who ever worked with or associated with him.
Hartley, like the mythological Narcissus, is totally convinced that all of creation revolves around him, must agree with him and must participate with him in his acts of irrational vengeance to all non-believers in the cult of Donald.
Need convincing? You have nothing to do but believe your own eyes. No true and devout Catholic would ever imagine that any sacred countenance could compare with the Holy Face of Jesus. Those piercing eyes that see the vileness in my soul yet look on me with love. That furrowed brow weighing the consequence of each life event against all of eternity. That crown of his head, pierced with thorns for me.
What does Hartley see in the devotion to the Holy Face? Another opportunity to show us his own goofy face, dazed and confused, apparently because he is too stupid to figure out how he drove the APC into the ditch.
What kind of sacrilegious pig would put up his own face in a post about the Holy Face of Jesus?
Donald Hartley is one of the most purely evil, vile swine I have ever met. He literally has liearrea (the image is appropriate), he is a blasphemer, he slanders historians, apologists, priests, Bishops, even former Popes. He bullies and harasses not only those he disagrees with but even the innocent bystanders who happen to associate with those people. He respects no boundaries, holds nothing sacred, values no person except in what they can do for him.
His heart is an open sewar, his soul is an empty grave, and his personality Eddie on 'Christmas vacation'. He is a proven liar, a proven thief, a proven user and manipulator and - as far as everyone I know is concerned- he has a sick, vile attraction to children. I absolutely believe he is a pedophile, and I would know the behavior because I had the horrible experience of helping to send one to prison.
Can I prove that Hartley is a pedophile? Not yet. Can I prove he is a vile, evil, horrible, filthy human being who cannot respect the boundaries of decency that most of us automatically understand? He has already proven that himself.
If Hartley wants to redeem himself with the countless people he has ostracized, he had better take a long hard look at himself because he has a lot to clean up. He certainly is far more vicious, evil, dishonest and sacrilegious than any of the many people he attacks, me included.
Hartley is a disgrace to the uniform, a blight on the conservative movement and a sacrilegious scandal to the Catholic faith he pretends to uphold.
